When you consider everything you need to do when moving home – all of the jobs that need to be done to ensure a smooth move, the packing process is definitely near the top. I mean, think about it – if the packaging isn’t done to a reasonable standard, then all of your goods are put at risk. The question is then, how do you handle the packing and unpacking? You can do it all yourself, you can hire a company to handle everything for you, or you could do a mixture of both. Here’s the run down;
Doing it all yourself
By doing everything yourself, you’ll have to get all of the materials together yourself. Make a checklist; get yourself a collection of sturdy boxes – get a little more than you need, just in case you miscalculate the amount of items you’re taking. Add the extra packing materials, like the packing tape, paper, bubble wrap and labels. The packing tape needs to be strong, so it will only come apart when you want it too. The packing paper can be replaced by newspaper if you have any around – it’s just for filling in empty spaces in the boxes so your things don’t move about too much. The bubble wrap is another essential item; to soften any impacts. And the labels will keep everything organised, so you know which room the boxes are taking care of.
Once you’ve got all of your supplies together, it’s time to start packing. For obvious reasons, valuables should be kept away from heavier items, and should be placed in their own boxes. Every item should be wrapped in one or two layers of bubble wrap, but more fragile items will require more. The packing process should be handled with care, so be sure not to over load any of the boxes. It doesn’t matter how sturdy your boxes are, if you put too much in them, they’re bound to split and ruin your day. As long as you’re sensible with the packing, you should be fine.
Hiring a packing company
However, if you’re not confident in your packing technique, or if you feel you can’t spare the time, it may be in your best interest to hire a packing company. For obvious reasons, you can have peace of mind if you let a company full of trained professionals handle your goods, but you can also expect to pay a premium.
There’s a lot of labour involved with packing companies; they have to do a survey of all of the items they’ll be taking care of, so they can gauge the weight and size of each. By doing this they can find out how many materials they’ll need and if anything needs a specific packaging technique. If you’re taking on a large move, hiring a packing company to handle all of your goods might end up being on the pricier side.
